Sober Wednesday - first sober wedding!

Happy Sober Wednesday!

As I mentioned in Monday's post, I did a lot of driving over the Bank Holiday Weekend, almost five hundred miles in fact.

This was to attend the wedding of some old school friends. Their wedding was to be the first wedding I attend while staying away from alcohol.

It was also Day 90 alcohol free so at this point I'm feeling strong and secure in my decision not to drink. Plus I have this blog keeping me accountable :-)

Luckily for me, my friends have excellent taste and the wedding was absolutely beautiful, with plenty of non-alcoholic options. I toasted them with a fizzy elderflower drink (which was delicious) and had water during the meal.

It can be a bit odd being the only one at the table who refuses wine (and I was the only one not eating meat so I felt like I stuck out a bit). Previously I would have thought it would take something away from the occasion to toast with anything other than champagne. However, I was just so happy for them and happy to be there I didn't feel like there was anything missing at all.

After the meal there was a Ceilidh. I've always loved ceilidhs so I took the opportunity to dance my socks off - sober. I was glad I hadn't had alcohol as all the spinning around actually made me feel quite drunk! I may have been dizzy but at least I kept some coordination. During the ceilidh it seemed like all anyone was drinking was water, to cool down after the dancing, so I fitted right in, yay!

Mr. SSV and I stayed until around 10:30pm, and then said our goodbyes and headed back to the hotel. Yes we left early but I had been up since 5am and was definitely flagging and keen to check in to where we were staying.

It's interesting, I still get tired and sleep-deprived now that I've stopped drinking, but I can always remind myself how much worse I would have felt had I also been drinking. Getting up at 8am the following day was hard but thank goodness I wasn't hungover. We had our hotel breakfasts and left half an hour earlier than we planned to (great when you have a full day of driving ahead), and when I finally got home I slept like a log, and had an extremely chilled out Bank Holiday Monday.

Had I been back in my old ways, I probably would have hit the bubbly asap at the wedding, made a spectacle of myself at the ceilidh, felt horrendous the next day, and would still have had to drive the six hours home. This scenario is so much more grim than what actually transpired.

We can still celebrate without alcohol, we can still catch up with old friends and make new ones, we can dance the night away and then go and have a wonderful night's sleep. We've been conditioned to believe that we need booze, and we really don't. Alcohol takes a lot away from us, while putting us under the illusion that it's giving us a good time. We don't need it.

That's all from me for today, I'll see you here for Vegan Friday in a few days.
